The OFT has regularly run campaigns to raise business and consumer awareness on a variety of different issues. These ranged from how you can protect yourself from scams to the different ways of saving for Christmas.
The campaigns, which are carried out in partnership with other organisations such as local authority Trading Standards Services and Consumer Direct, featured a range of elements: national radio advertising, national and local media advertising, online features, DVDs, regional workshops, direct mail and the targeted distribution of leaflets.
Government Spending Cuts Announcement: OFT Communication Campaigns
The Government's May announcement on efficiency cuts included a freeze on all government marketing and advertising for the rest of this financial year, apart from certain key campaigns that meet defined criteria. This means that the OFT's published paper of campaigns activities 2010-11 (pdf 150kb) outlining our proposed communication aims, including a timeline of all proposed activities, is now out of date.
Campaigns on loan sharks and scam ticketing went ahead in May and June as scheduled. Activity on doorstep selling in July, focusing on rogue traders, will go ahead, although the campaign will be PR based and not supported by wider marketing. We also plan to launch our online Sale of Goods business guidance in June; and Skilled to go work continues. All other campaigns discussed in the paper, published at the start of the fiscal year, are currently on hold, pending discussions with Treasury spending teams.
