Market studies update

The OFT has launched a short market study into the sale of second-hand cars. This follows concerns about the large number of consumer complaints about the sector.

The OFT is also consulting on a proposed revision to its guidance on how it conducts market studies. The consultation is open until 4 August and gives stakeholders the opportunity to provide views and comments on the revised guidance.

OFT Chief Executive John Fingleton selected Chairman of the International Competition Network (ICN)

The appointment was confirmed today at the eighth annual ICN conference in Zurich.

In his closing speech to the conference today, John Fingleton praised the work of the ICN since its inception in drawing together national competition agencies which can achieve more collectively than acting separately.

Home maintenance tops list of Consumer Protection cases

Cases against home maintenance traders have topped the list of actions in the first year of new consumer legislation, the OFT has revealed.

Three arrests in suspected pyramid scheme investigation

The OFT has continued its criminal investigation into a suspected unlawful pyramid scheme operating in the South West of England and South Wales by carrying out further raids in the Bristol area.

Consumer Direct is urging people to avoid falling victim to pyramid schemes which are costing UK consumers an estimated £420 million a year.
